Full Harvest Moon

Most full moons area associated with a certain month, but that is not the case for the one happening tonight! The full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, or the first day of autumn, is known as the Full Harvest Moon.  In some years, it takes place in September and in others, like this year, it is an October full moon.

Why it is called the Harvest Moon? Moonrise will happen very soon after sunset eliminating the period of darkness that typically happens between the two.  In the days before tractors with headlights, the bright moonlight so early in the evening aided farmers in the harvesting of their end of the summer crops.

What activity will you enjoy by the bright light of the moon?

This year's next full moon, the Blue Moon, will happen on October 31st, Halloween!
