Dogs on the Farm
We appreciate all of the things that animals do to help farmers. Today, let's think about dogs! Dogs have been helping humans for thousands of years- even before livestock species were domesticated. Since humans and dogs have so much history, it seemed natural that dogs would continue helping people with different jobs on the farm. Some of the most important jobs that dogs have on the farm include: moving herds from place to place, guarding livestock and ridding the farm of rodents. The act of moving livestock is called herding.
Your challenge today is test your 'herding' skills at any MetroPark location or in your own backyard! Bring your favorite balls from home like kick balls, beach balls and the like. Scatter them around in the greenspace you are playing in. Choose a spot it that area and pretend that spot is the doors to a barn that you want to lead your livestock to. Start gathering up the balls by kicking, tossing or carrying them to the doors, just like a herding dog would chase the sheep back to the barn.
If you have a pet dog, you can bring them with you and encourage them to participate, too! Just be sure to keep your pup on a leash. Have fun!
We offer a periodic newsletter with information about upcoming events and programs.
