America250 Commemoration Highlights Butler County’s Ties to the Founding of the United States

May 8, 2026, 11:00 AM by Katie Ely-Wood

Two Revolutionary War veterans buried in Butler County will be honored during the 63rd Annual Salute to Pioneers at the historic Indian Creek Pioneer Church and Burial Ground, connecting local history to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary of independence.

Presented by the Indian Creek Pioneer Church and Burial Ground Restoration Committee and MetroParks of Butler County in conjunction with America250, this year’s program will commemorate the lives and service of Revolutionary War patriots Thomas Boone, cousin of the famed frontiersman Daniel Boone, and Heman Adams, both of whom are buried at the Pioneer Church cemetery. Brad Spurlock, manager of Lane Library’s Smith Library of Regional History, will share the stories and military service of Boone and Adams, shedding light on the legacies of local veterans who helped shape the future of the United States.

About Indian Regular Baptist Church (Pioneer Church) & Burial Ground
The Indian Creek Regular Baptist Church was established in 1810 by people who migrated westward following the Revolutionary War. When the congregation outgrew its original log structure, members constructed the current brick church in 1829 using handmade bricks fired onsite. Today, the church remains one of the oldest surviving churches in Ohio and is preserved by MetroParks of Butler County. The adjacent cemetery, Butler County’s first public burial ground, is the final resting place of nearly 200 early community members, veterans, and families whose lives became part of the region’s history.

Honoring Ohio’s Revolutionary War Veterans during America250
An estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans are buried throughout Ohio. As part of the national America250 celebration, the Ohio Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project is documenting and preserving information about these veterans and their final resting places. The initiative is a partnership between the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Anyone can submit known Revolutionary War veterans' graves here.

As of May 2026, 4,085 Ohio veteran graves have been documented.

MetroParks Preserves and Shares Local Revolutionary War History

MetroParks of Butler County is actively preserving and documenting Revolutionary War history at sites under its care, ensuring the stories of early American service members are not lost to time. The organization manages three properties with known Revolutionary War veteran interments:
Pioneer Church (Reily Township, OH)
Bunker Hill Cemetery (Reily Township, OH)
The Line/Shafer Farm Cemetery (Fairfield Township, OH)

Through the Ohio Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project, these sites collectively include eight documented graves of Revolutionary War veterans. This ongoing work helps connect Butler County’s historic landscapes to the broader national story being commemorated through America250, while preserving these burial sites for future generations.
