MetroParks of Butler County Encourages Residents to "Leave the Leaves" This Fall

As autumn leaves begin to fall, MetroParks of Butler County is encouraging residents to reconsider the routine of raking and disposing of leaves. Leaving leaves on the ground or repurposing them in gardens provides significant environmental benefits.

“Fallen leaves are a crucial part of the natural cycle,” said Joe Dumyahn, Director of Natural Resources and Conservation for MetroParks. “They provide habitat for pollinators, improve soil fertility, and reduce the amount of waste entering landfills.”

Why Leaving Leaves Matters:

  • Supports wildlife: Pollinators like bee queens, fireflies, and moths overwinter in leaf litter. Larger animals, such as salamanders and rodents, also rely on fallen leaves for shelter.
  • Improves soil: Decomposing leaves act as a natural fertilizer and help enrich the soil with nutrients.
  • Reduces waste: Fewer bagged leaves mean less landfill material and lower disposal costs. A 2019 study by the U.S. Chamber Foundation found that 30.4% of Cincinnati’s waste stream is composed of compostable organic materials like yard waste.
  • Lessens environmental toxins: Burning leaves releases pollutants like carbon monoxide, which contributes to global warming and health issues in people.

Simple Ways to Take Action:

  • Mulch-mow leaves into your lawn.
  • Create leaf piles around trees or in garden beds.
  • Use leaves as mulch for gardens or to start a compost pile.

MetroParks Leads by Example

Across its 23 parks and nearly 5,000 acres, MetroParks leaves the leaves as much as possible, reinforcing its mission of conservation and sustainability.

“By letting leaves do their thing, residents can help create healthier backyards and a healthier environment for the entire community,” Dumyahn added.
